Developer mode
Developer mode brings together everything you need to iterate on an agent in a single screen: you can chat with the agent, edit its configuration and inspect the troubleshooting details of the conversation side by side, without closing the chat.
Open developer mode
You can open developer mode in two ways:
- From the side menu, in Agents > Developer Mode. Choose the agent you want to work with in the Select an agent selector.
- From the ⋮ menu of an agent, in the agents list or in the agent detail page, by selecting Developer Mode.
The agent name in the top bar is also a selector: choosing another agent switches to it and starts a new session.
Layout
Developer mode uses the full screen and is organized in three panels:
- Agent chat (center): the same chat your end users see, connected to the selected agent.
- Edit Agent (left): the agent configuration, organized in the General, Configuration, Tools and Advanced tabs.
- Troubleshoot (right): the troubleshooting details of the current conversation.
The top bar contains the following controls:
| Control | Description |
|---|---|
| Agents | Goes back to the agents list. |
| Edit Agent | Opens or closes the edit panel. |
| Troubleshoot | Opens or closes the troubleshooting panel. It is available once the chat starts. |
| New Chat | Starts a new conversation with the agent. |
| Exit | Leaves developer mode. |
You can resize the side panels by dragging the handles between panels, or by focusing a handle and using the left and right arrow keys. The open panels and their widths are remembered by your browser for your next visit.
Edit the agent while chatting
Make your changes in the Edit Agent panel and click Save. The changes apply to the next message you send, so you can check their effect in the same conversation, without starting over.
If a validation error prevents saving, the Configuration tab is marked with a red dot.
Troubleshoot the conversation
The Troubleshoot panel shows the details of the current conversation: messages, tool calls, the information they returned, the prompt sent to the model and costs.
By default the panel refreshes automatically every few seconds while the conversation is active (Live). You can pause the automatic refresh, refresh it manually, or open the conversation in Activity > Troubleshoot in a new tab.
